Why is Mark Sanchez so cool under fire? Maybe it's because his Dad has been facing fires his whole life.
Nick Sanchez, Mark's dad, a firefighter based in Irvine, joined us on Mason & Ireland on Wednesday, and we talked about how he raised his 3 sons (all played college football and Mark, the youngest, might be the best of the bunch).
I pointed out that Nick has a completely measured, calm demeanor and wondered if Mark got that from him. There's a heckuva lot of pressure battling a wildfire or a burning building. Remaining calm in a life and death situation must be a critical quality. Maybe Nick has been able to pass that along to his son. When the Trojans get into a close game and Mark is facing 3rd & long or 4th & 2. I suspect that the Trojan signal-caller will have that "calm under pressure" and "solid leadership ability" when a big game is on the line.
At least one writer, Heather Dinich from ESPN.com, says that Mark Sanchez is the early Heisman Trophy leader. I think she's right, although, the overall ESPN Expert's Poll (same link) has Mark Sanchez at #5, trailing Florida QB Tim Tebow, Missouri QB Chase Daniel, West Virginia QB Pat White and Beanie Wells from the Buckeyes.
