Henry Waxman "gavels down" The Rocket!

Congressman Henry Waxman killed Roger Clemens in his summary at the end of today's hearing before the House Oversight Committee.

I don't understand why every issue in Washington must break along party lines. The Republicans on the committee were pro-Clemens, the Democrats were pro-McNamee. Can't these guys agree on anything? No wonder nothing ever gets done in that town.

For me, it's clear that Clemens is lying. It's not Roger's word against Brian McNamee. Clemens wants us to believe that he's right and McNamee, Andy Pettitte, Andy Pettitte's wife, Chuck Knoblauch, the Clemens' nanny from 7 years ago and even his own wife are either lying or they "mis-remembered" what really happened.

Will there be a perjury charge? I hope not. Clemens has been punished. His resume will forever be tainted by his use of performance enhancing drugs and his behavior when confronted by the Mitchell Commission Report. The word steroids will be in the first paragraph of his obit someday.

As for the Hall of Fame, Wally Matthews from Newsday joined me today on The Steve Mason Show, and he's a voter. He says that he'll never vote for Roger. My guess is that of the Hall of Fame caliber steroid guys, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmiero and Sammy Sosa have no shot. Bonds is 35/65 depending on how his perjury trial plays out. Clemens, with 7 Cy Young Awards, is no better than a 50/50 shot to get into Cooperstown.

Most of this damage has been self-inflicted. He chose to use steroids and HGH. Then, when confronted with the Mitchell Commission Report, he chose to play it like the arrogant bully he is. Had he said something along the line of, "I did it a couple of times. I regret it. I'm sorry to my fans, my teammates and the game," this story would have drifted away with no fireworks and no high drama.
